Women In Construction – Natalie Casey

An interview with Natalie Casey, Director of Interior Design and Commercial.
What drew you to a career in the construction industry, despite it being traditionally male-dominated?
In the beginning it was tough being ignored on site visits but that only made me want to stand taller and make it harder to ignore me. Watching a napkin sketch turn into an entire building in an incredible feeling, and I refuse to allow the ignorance of others take that joy away from me.
What do you think are the key factors that could encourage more women to pursue careers in construction?
Women seem to provide a keen eye during the construction detailing which leads to projects that are built with a higher quality of work. In addition, has more women join the industry it will help break the stereotypes perpetuated by their male counterparts.
Have you had experience with mentoring other women in the industry?
Watching people grow is just as exciting to me as watching my building designs being built. Being a mentor gives emerging professionals the opportunity that I did not have. While navigating my career, I often felt alone and alienated. With mentoring, I have the opportunity to prevent that for other young women.
